Court charges 16 Mursi supporters with Oct. 6 violence
A misdemeanor court sentenced 16 supporters of deposed President Mohamed Mursi to three years in prison on Saturday for violence that erupted three weeks ago on the anniversary of the October Six War.

The defendants were sentenced to two years for assembly and another year for “thuggery”, their attorney said.

Clashes between Mursi’s supporters, his opponents and armed forces resulted in the death of 59 people and the injury of hundreds on October 6.

Mursi’s supporters had tried to reach Tahrir to protest in the iconic square but were stopped by thousands of army supporters who were celebrating the anniversary of the war.

The deposed president’s supporters have been staging protests since Egypt’s army ousted Mursi in July in response to mass demonstrations all over the country.
