Azhar disagrees with constituent assembly over phrasing
The representatives of al-Azhar in the 50-member constituent assembly amending Egypt's suspended constitution have expressed concerns over amending one of the articles.

The representatives are displeased that the assembly wants to include non-Muslims in the third article of the constitution, a member told Al-Ahram.

Article III grants Christian and Jewish communities in Egypt the right to resort to their own laws and principles in their personal lives, religious matters and in choosing their spiritual leaders.

The members reaffirmed their backing for any steps that will lead Egypt in the right path while conserving its identity and Islamic values beside the people's freedoms and dignity.

The ultraconservative Nour Party also expressed concerns over this amendment last week.
