Egypt civil society groups to monitor presidential election

Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission (SPEC) Secretary-General Hatem Bagato announced Sunday that Egyptian civil society organisations registered by the Ministry of Social Solidarity would be able to monitor the upcoming presidential election, while the role of foreign groups is still under discussion.

He added that the commission will meet Monday to put in place conditions for the monitoring operation to begin as soon as polling stations open on 23 May.

Bagato clarified that the SPEC has no relation to the case against foreign and Egyptian NGO workers.

Presidential elections will take place on 23 and 24 May, and the president will be named on 21 June after a runoff voting round on 16 and 17 June.
