El-Awa campaign concerned over Brotherhood decision to field candidate

Following news that the Muslim Brotherhood will be putting their member Khairat El-Shater forward for president, Mohamed Selim El-Awa’s campaign coordinator Mohamed Moemen told Ahram Online that he was concerned about the chances for an Islamist success.

Moemen stated his belief that El-Shater’s nomination will make the campaign more difficult, as it will only divide the Islamist votes further.

“It will be more difficult for an Islamist to reach this position [of president] and increase the chances of a liberal candidate,” he said.

Currently, there are four different Islamist candidates running in Egypt’s 2012 presidential race. These are Salafist figure Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail, former Muslim Brotherhood member Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh, leading Brotherhood figure El-Shater and El-Awa.
