Khaled Ali joins workers' protest in front of tax authority

Potential presidential candidate Khaled Ali joined striking employees outside the Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA) building in downtown Cairo today and announced his support for their demands.

Ali stressed the importance of a maximum wage, including allowances and incentives, across all sectors of the economy.

He also noted that the number of tax advisors in the country had topped 94,000 at a cost of around LE17 billion and that it was crucial to add special funds to the state budget.

The strike by ETA employees has been ongoing since Tuesday 13 March. They demand the departure of ETA head Ahmed Refaat and head of the tax sector Mounira El-Qadi, who are both in their positions despite passing the mandatory retirement age.
