Egypt Mubarak’s trial could be moved

CAIRO - The trial of former president Hosni Mubarak, due in August, could be moved from Cairo to the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for ‘security or health reasons’, the head of the Cairo Appeals Court, el-Sayyed Abdel-Aziz Omar, told a private TV channel.

When interviewed by al-Arabiya late on Saturday, Omar stressed that only the Minister of Justice has the right to move the trial.
He added that Judge Ahmed Refaat, who is in charge of Mubarak’s trial and is due to retire next November, will carry on with his work until the end of the next judicial year, June 30, 2012, according to the rules.
“If Mubarak’s trial should continue past mid-2012, another judge will take over, according to the recognised judicial procedures,” Omar explained.
