Spanish FM to support Egypt democracy

CAIRO - Spain is willing to help Egypt develop its tourism business and assist its transition to democracy, Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez said during a visit to Cairo on Monday.

'Spain aims to offer what it can to Egypt, particularly in the economic realm, where we can encourage investments and establish join projects in the field of tourism, for example,' Jimenez said after talks in the Egyptian capital with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil el-Arabi. Jimenez also met with members of Egypt's opposition, including Mohamed ElBaradei, the former UN nuclear watchdog chief and a leading pro-democracy figure in his native Egypt. Jimenez, who is touring the Middle East, had previously held talks with the secretary general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa. The Arab League's call for a no-fly zone over Libya was 'courageous,' Jimenez said after her talks Sunday with Moussa, adding that Spain and the European Union were prepared to support such a no-fly zone, but only with the backing of a UN Security Council resolution.
