Egypts Sisi, Iraq president Saleh discuss Turkeys offensive against Syria

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Iraqi president Barham Saleh discussed in a phone call the situation in Syria after Turkey’s offensive against the country, the Egyptian presidency said on Wednesday.

In the call, the two leaders agreed to continue discussions to "counter the Turkish move and to preserve the integrity and unity of Syria," presidency spokesman Bassam Rady said in a statement.

Turkey launched a military offensive against Kurdish militia in northeast Syria on Wednesday, few days after US troops withdrew from the area.

The move represents a "dangerous development that threatens international peace and security and exacerbates the crisis situation in the region," the statement read.

The Arab League said it would hold an emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss the "Turkish aggression” on Syrian territory following a call by Egypt for the 22-state body to meet over the matter.

The Turkish offensive has drawn a flurry of international denunciation including from the European Union, the UK, Germany and Italy.
