A Shift of Focus

Among the turbulence and political instability, I would like to take the time to focus on another aspect of our country, tourism. Only recently, a group of archeology students discovered 17 new mummies in central Egypt. Using radar technology, the students were able to locate the burial chamber of mummies, which they believe go back as far as 1500 years, the time of the Roman Empire.

Why is this important? I'm focusing on this, because I read something quite interesting in the news. A writer was discussing the implications of this find, and that perhaps Egypt itself has means to try and lure tourists back to it's natural heritage. The country is basically advertising for itself and trying to get back on the world stage but for different reasons. Currently, all people hear about and speak about is the political instability, the persecution against the Copts, the rising prices and inflation. This is the first positive thing to emerge from Egypt for a long time.

People all over the world learn in their elementary school education about Egypt. All Westerners learn about the pyramids, pharaohs, mummies, and all the other ancient Egyptian mysteries. Thousands of documentaries have been made. Westerners all have the same fundamental knowledge about Egypt, and all intrinsically want to go and visit at some point in their lifetime. The fact that these new mummies have been discovered, has great potential if the Egyptian people know how to use this discovery to their advantage.

If we just shift our focus from the discrimination, violence, and turbulence that Egyptians are facing now, and try to build up a potentially beneficial income source, tourism, we could actually be a step closer to being a profitable and fair country again.

However, what does this mean? It means that people want to come. Great. So what's holding them back? The answer is a no brainer. The fear of violence, kidnapping, dying, which are all very real risks. We need to somehow work on the safety of the country, because believe me, the people will come, everyone is born wanting to come to Egypt, they're just scared right now, that's all. So let's try to dispel any fears tourists may have, and get back to the land of of the great, the "mother of the world"
