Egyptian delegation to US postponed due to busy Trump inauguration schedule

A visit to the US by a delegation of Egyptian government officials and civil society members set for 21 January has been postponed as a number of top US officials will not be available to meet over the week of inauguration of Presient-elect Trump.

Alaa Abed, the head of the Egyptian parliament's Human Rights Committee, said “We want to discuss a wide range of issues regarding terrorism and human rights with a large number of American decision-makers and research centres, and this will be difficult to have happen next week."

The 15-member Egyptian delegation, comprising MPs and civil society representatives, was scheduled to arrive in Washington on 21 January, one day after the inauguration of Donald Trump as the new US president.

The delegation also aims to discuss political Islam and democratisation in Egypt with the new US administration and Congress, as well as lobby the new administration and Republican MPs to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation.

Abed also said that the visit was delayed so that the delegation can be expanded and better prepare for the visit.

“We want the scope of the delegation to be widened to include more high-profile Egyptian figures,” said Abed.
