Egypt and Turkey foreign ministers meet in Venezuela on sidelines of non-aligned summit

A meeting was held between Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in Venezuela, the official Twitter account of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman said on Saturday.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the non-aligned summit which the two FMs are currently attending.

"The meeting reflected a will to trespass the disagreements with Egypt" the spokesman’s statement said.

Last month, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that Turkey is looking to improve relations with Egypt.

Relations between Turkey and Egypt have been strained since the 2013 ouster of Egypt’s Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, a close ally of Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP government.

Erdogan made several statements in support of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood branch, which Egypt condemned as provocative.

Cairo has repeatedly accused Ankara of "interference" in its domestic affairs and providing a safe haven for leading members of the now banned Muslim Brotherhood group, while Erdogan's government has remained an outspoken critic of Morsi's ouster and of El-Sisi’s presidency.
