NCW head calls for probe into MP’s “shameful” remarks on women

Secretary-General of Egypt’s National Council for Women (NCW) Ambassador Mona Omar called on the House of Representatives to take a serious decision against MP Elhamy Agena who suggested “Only women are to be blamed for Egypt’s adultery problems,” Youm7 reported.

Agena’s remarks are “shameful, negatively impacts the status of men and discredit their mental ability,” said Omar who called for referral of Agena to the the parliament’s ethics committee.

Agena’s remarks came after member of the parliament’s human rights committee MP Margaret Azer announced she plans to submit a draft bill to amend provisions and penalties stated at the “unfair” Egyptian adultery law, under which a man is only considered to have committed adultery if he has sex with a woman within the home he shares with his wife.

According to the Egyptian penal code, a woman is considered to have committed adultery whether or not she is at home.
