Mubarak’s ex-Premier acquitted of illicit gain charges: Court

Former President Hosni Mubarak’s Prime Minister, Ahmed Nazif, was acquitted of profiteering and illicit gain charges Wednesday, stated Egypt’s Court of Cassation Wednesday.

The Court, chaired by Judge Magdy Abu el-Ela, said that the trial is unchallengeable and the verdict is final.

On Sept. 13, 2012 Nazif received a sentence of three years in prison and was fined more than 9 million EGP. However, he appealed against the verdict on Nov. 6 before the Court of Cassation which accepted it on June 13, 2013 and ordered a retrial.

Cairo Criminal Court considered the retrial and sentenced him to five years in jail and a fine of 53 million EGP besides paying the government about 48.6 million EGP in July 2015. However, Nazif challenged the retrial verdict and the Court of Cassation overturned it on Dec. 2, 2015.

In February 2015, Nazif and the former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly were acquitted in the case known widely as the “license plates” case.
