Pope Tawadros weekly sermon 24 Jun 2015: Barnabas

Barnabas is one of the 70 apostles who were chosen by the Lord Christ.Barnabas is one of the 70 apostles who were chosen by the Lord Christ.

He has another name, which is Joses.

He is a Levite of the country of Cyprus; this country used to have services for the Coptic Church and it used to have dioceses at some times of the history.

Currently, we have churches and there are fathers who serve there.

Barnabas is originally Jewish; he is from Levi’ Tribe.

“Barnabas” has two meanings

According to the Bible; it says “Son of Encouragement” meaning the son of the comfortable word.

One of the Encouragement’ goals is listening to God’ word that console the son.

“Console” means “relieve the heart”.

Also, his name is translated to “the son of Prophecy”; prophecy refers to one side of encouragement’ ones, as I’m going to tell you about it after a while.

Barnabas used to be accompanied by St. Paul the apostle who was learning at the University of Tarsus.

Tarsus was one of the most famous places in the 1st era of AD; it’s located in Asia Minor.

The University of Tarsus used to have excellent teachers and it was famous for its philosophy; this is the place where St. Paul the apostle used to learn.
We can imagine that Barnabas used to sit beside him as a schoolmate.
