Woman injured, 3 suspected militants killed in separate Sinai incidents - sources

Security apparatuses were notified that a 32-year-old woman was shot in her left shoulder and hospitalised, the state news agency MENA reported.

In another incident, three brothers were kidnapped from their home in North Sinai, tribal sources said.

While the vast majority of militant attacks in Egypt have targeted security personnel, civilians have been affected.

Meanwhile, in the north of the peninsula, military sources told Aswat Masriya that three suspected militants believed to belong to the Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis militant group were killed in a security campaign.

Ansar has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on Egyptian security forces, both before and after it affiliated itself with Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria, pledging allegiance to the group in November 2014.

A dozen were arrested in the operation, the sources said, adding that the campaign was carried out after security apparatuses learned that there is a cell planning to carry out a "terrorist operation" against security forces.

Militancy in Egypt has seen a significant rise since July 2013, with most attacks targeting sites in North Sinai.

Fresh attack on Saturday left two policemen in North Sinai dead after armed assailants fired at them in separate attacks.

Egypt's security forces have been carrying out intensified campaigns to fight the insurgency. The armed forces spokesman announced yesterday that a total of 725 suspected militants have been killed by Egyptian security forces in the six months between late October and late April.
