Editors-in-chief do not represent us: Journalists Against the Protest Law

Journalists Against the Protest Law (JAPL) refused the meeting held last week by editors-in-chief of major publications in a Sunday statement.

The signatories described the editor’s meeting as intending to kill the career of journalism, “and a waste of the dignity of every Egyptian journalist.”

Egyptian newspaper editors-in-chief met Sunday at the Wafd Party headquarters to discuss future coverage as a way to “confront terrorism” following deadly militant attacks Friday that killed 31 soldiers in North Sinai.

The editors stated after the meeting that media workers should avoid any actions that “support terrorism,” and they condemned the Friday attack.

“This meeting and the followed statement is nothing but repeating a “one opinion policy,” as the authority is still following and chasing journalists banning the freedom of expression, said JAPL Sunday.

JAPL called for protests outside the Press Syndicate in September, and 15 journalists also announced the beginning of a hunger strike in opposition to the 2013 Protest Law, which criminalizes all political gatherings that do not have prior authorization by security forces.
