Former presidential candidates face charges of insulting judiciary

Former presidential candidates Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, head of Strong Egypt Party, and human rights activist Khaled Ali will be investigated for charges of insulting the judiciary through the media, a judicial source told Youm7 Wednesday, adding that a number of political activists and media figures would also be investigated on the same charges.

The cases were filed by Ahmed al-Zend and number of other judges. Judge Tharwat Hammad was assigned by the Cairo Court of Appeals to preside over the cases, and investigations are still ongoing, the source said.

The investigation authority had referred ousted president Mohamed Morsi and 25 other Muslim Brotherhood leaders, media figures, and political activists to criminal court on charges of insulting the judiciary. It cleared 85 journalists and media figures of charges to emphasize the importance of freedom of speech, according to the source.
